I love the name Tristen. Any name that is different is great to me. I refused to name my boys something like Michael or David because I didn't want them to have the same name as half of their class mates. :o)

It's ok.
The problem is that people think it's unusual. You should check the Social Security Administration website for official statistics, "Tristen" is a real rising star among name popularity, so there could be several Tristen's in his class.
Also, it's somewhat of an androgynous name - could be a girl's name too.

So many people are going with unusual and uncommon names these days that it is difficult to have more than one Michael or David in the same class! It's more likely that you will have 4 Xander's or something odd like that. I went with traditional names for my twins-Matthew and Joshua- and they are the only Matthew & Joshua in their class. My daughter, Madison, is named after her grandfather and she is the only one in her class also. I think the name that you have picked is nice.
