I am attempting to make a lamp using a 3 point plug, standard wire and the bit where the bulb goes in. I can wire the plug fine its just the bit where the bulb goes in only has two recievers (i assume for live and neutral) and the earth wire is left redundant. I wouldnt want to short the house by wiring it incorrectly if anyone knows correct procedure please let me know asap!

Just use the brown and blue wires to the lamp - cut the green/yellow wire off. It's not necessary unless the whole lamp is made of metal in which case it's not a bad idea to connect it to earth if there is a suitable place to connect it.

Jayktee96 gives good advice. I would say that if the body of the lamp is metal then it should have an earth connection, if not (Most plastic lamps dont) just cut the earth wire flush with the insulation. If the lamp uses a standard bulb and the connections are not marked (L and N) then it does not matter what way you connect the live and neutral, but always connect them correctly in the plug.

If you wiring is neat and secure you will be ok. Do not just reuse cable, always cut and strip to suit the proposed fitting. Discard any plug with a faulty cord grip and make sure no bare copper wire is showing outside the terminals.

sorry this is a bit late just came across it but your right onto it when you said that you wire the plug, then when it comes to the bulb bit wire the pos/neg,as per normal,if the light has a metal fitting wire the earth to the metal fitting ,if its not ignore it .you only realy need the two wires when it comes to lighting a lamp

If your lampholder is metal then it will have a terminal for you to attach the earth lead. You must use this.
If the thing is plastic then you won't need the earth.

You don't say what sort of lampholder you are using. If it is a conventional two pin bayonet type then you can connect the live and neutal to either of the pins. If it is an Edison Screw type (with a single central pin) then you must connect Live to the central pin and Neutral to the threaded bit.

You shoud only be using 2 core cable (Blue and Brown) for a light. It doesn't need earthed.

The light bulb can be wired either way - it doesn't matter.

If the lampholder and lamp body are non-metalic there is no earth connection required, you can safely cut it off flush with the sheath. You need only have used twin flex. You can connect the lampholder either way around.

what you say is correct, be careful tho as the bulb holder gets warm, hold the cable when moving it around, I have done the same.
