When I am watching something I've recorded to the hard disc it occasionally skips and sometimes makes a high pitched 'squeak' noise at the same time. Can't figure out if it is a bad 'signal' from the integrated digital tuner it has recorded from (as it does sometimes show a black screen with 'no signal' on it) or whether it is a fault with the recording or playback or hard disc. Any ideas or similar experiences appreciated.

Sound like your Hard drive within the unit having problem. From my experience usually the head from writing and reading almost gone. I think you need to replace this hard drive soon.
