External hard disc problem?

I bought an external hard disc recently.
After minutes using it, a message bubble appears stating "Windows- Delayed Write Failed".
What causes this problem? The casing? The cable?
And when I use it on a Mac, I can only access and read the files in the disc but I can't write files into it. Why??

have you partitioned and formatted the hard drive using disk manager ?

turn it off then wait and turn it back on
