Hey everybody, I'm a 18-year-old Italian girl, and in exactly two days I'm going to take the FCE, First Certificate of English exam.
I'm not really worried for the exam itsself, I'm usually rather good at English so that's not what I'm mainly preoccupied for BUT it's my first real exam in front of total strangers (the examiners).
I wasn't scared until today but now I have this sense of anxiety and panic, basically for the spoken part of the exam, and it just won't go away... I know it's normal to get frightened like this, but it's really annoying since basically I have nothing to fear, and I don't want to screw up my exam just because I'll be in blind panic. Do you have any suggestions? any tricks to feel more relaxed or self confident? I thought about drinking a beer before the exam but I might be a little too laid back if I do that...whatever...
Thanks so much in advance, Sylvia

Remember that the examiners are just other people. Try to think of them that way - they have lives, homes, families - rather than "examiners" only.

Also, think about the possible outcomes of the exam. What if you speak correctly? What if you mess up? What if they like you? What if you fail the whole test? Think through each outcome and how it would be - you will live, and carry on no matter what happens.

Hopefully thinking past the test will make you less anxious about it.

Good luck!

PS - you could always fall back on that old stage-fright trick and picture the examiners in their underwear while you are taking the test!

Something I find helpful when I'm nervous about a job interview is to pretend I'm an actress in a movie about someone going on the job interview. That level of distancing is helpful to me. I say to myself, that character would be nervous so being nervous is good - realistic. That makes me better able to cope with the nervousness.

Good luck!

Keep calm, breathe deeply, and picture yourself breezing through the questions. There's nothing in the world like positive thinking. Nah, don't drink beer. If you want a real energy boost, have cup of coffee instead.

Whenever I was on stage before going on I was taught to do an exercise to stay calm and help focus. Just before you go in, if you put your thumbs and first finger together and breathe in and then let your breath out as you release them, working through each finger, breathing slowly & deeply and just concentrating on it totally. It really helps to get you centred!
Hope that helps, am sure you'll do great! :o)
