Most computers will last a long time if you take care of it. I have several Dell laptops, 1 for me and 1 for my wife. They do the job just fine. My laptop is 6 years old and runs great. If you get a anti-spy-ware, anti-virus, and firewall application and run them, it will stay fast and run a long time.
Dell generally has great deals that make it a pretty good buy. The current deals and coupons are available at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html
Good luck.

From my experience: Having used an IMAC and also having owned multiple PCs, I found that most Macs are VERY user friendly. They seem to be an OS that was made for the average consumer. Whereas windows XP would appear to be a business OS that doubled as a consumer OS. Is it a hard switch?: - I would say 'no'. The hardest thing would be the mouse. (that is if you get a mouse, you mentioned a 'mac book') The settings, by default, do not assign the mouse a 'right click' which may initially cause some issues. You can change this setting. - Widgets are included in Macs which are small application that allow you to access things like the weather, calculators, current gas prices, even simple games. Will I lose all of my music (i tunes) and everything else i have on my computer?: No, for the most part. Itunes is an APPLE application. Apple makes the Mac computers. So the transfer of your itunes music wouldn't even begin to be an issue. Other documents and such from the PC to the Mac shouldn't be an issue. Macs have similar software to Windows. (e.g. wordpad would be textedit) Most files should transfer flawlessly. What advantages do macs have over PCs or even PCs over macs?: I would consider Macs to be far more user friendly than any PC. Compatability with applications and games aren't an issue either. If you have an XP or VISTA disk, you can download for free the 'bootcamp' application available from Apple which allows you to dual boot between the Mac OS and any Windows or Linux OS. This would solve any compatability issues. Which is better?: Neither is really "better", it seems to be preference. Is it worth getting a mac book?: Absolutely, In my opinion, Macs are worth every penny that you put into them. They're safer than PCs, this is because most computer users in the world have a windows OS, so viruses and such are based towards the larger audience and NOT towards the few and far between Mac OS. They come with bundled software. Great technical support. User friendly and come with pretty good hardware.

Dell is the best of the worst.
The deals from Dell are often too good to pass up. You can get a really good computer for $1000. Compaq, HP and EMachine are all **** and tend to be way more work than its worth.
If you have the extra cash get a Sony but if you want a laptop go Toshiba.

There really aren't any physical advantages, a computer is a computer. The performance of the computer primarily depends on how new it is. The only advantage any Dell computer has over another is the excellent customer service. To tell the truth, you aren't paying for the computer as much as you are the name on the computer.

being a computer builder/ repairer the number of dell computers that I have had brought to me for repair, I have had to tell the owners that they can not be repaired by outside people. dell parts can only be bought from dell you can not mix and match with any of the box shifters,, Dell,HP,Compaq, Gateways, plus their after sales service needs looking into before you buy
If I was you I would look for a small local computer shop and have one built for you, that way you can always take it back should anything go wrong with it, you will also get a better service from a small local shop, because he needs to keep his customers happy or he will soon be out of business ... take my advice keep away from the big stores do your research after 30 days you will have to send the computer back to the manufactures at your expense

Dells are only the most popular because of their own advertsiing. I personally, am a Mac girl because all PCs are poorly built and constructed.
However, if you're looking for a PC that's good and long-lasting, I would get a Sony. I use them at my office, and they usually are pretty good.
