I have a 1997 Gmc Jimmy 4.6L , I have a oil leak from the back of the motor . I was told it is from the back of the intake . Well my question is that when I check my oil it is never low even thou i leave an oil spot . There is no water of fuel in the oil pan . I also thought it was power steering fluid but that is never low . I'm lost , can someone give me a idea of how this could be. Thank You

Engine oil leaks that can leave a spot the size of a dollar bill on your drive way are only about a tenth of a teaspoon of oil. Obviously you are not losing enough oil to indicate low levels on the dipstick. So the leak becomes an annoyance and not a serious engine problem.
Here is a hint.
Most 4.3 Chevrolet engines leak from the rear main seal and/or from the seal on the distributor shaft. While a rear seal is a major repair, the distributor shaft seal is a minor repair.

Too low on oil is bad and so is too much oil in the pan.

Too low and there is not enough oil to go around for lubrication. Too much and the excess oil will seep through the crankshaft seal.

Do you have an auto tranny? If so, when was the last time you had the tranny oil replaced? The transfer case has a relief valve on top. If your tranny oil is very old it must be boiling under heavy load (like going uphill) and the hot oil is coming out of the relief valve.

Color of the oil, black will be engine oil, red is transmission oil.

Rear main oil seal on crankshaft most likely if rear of engine and black.

Torque converter seal if red and near back of engine.

if its bad enough, then its bound to go down.it must be leaking enough to notice.it could be just seeping around the intake.i have a small leakage around my intake and it doesnt go down either.dont worry about, unless it gets worse.if you got a distributer, then it could be the gasket under it.
