It seems to me that whenever there is controversy in a match the Referee seems to be the one who gets the brunt of the blame for it. I think all referee's don't get a fair crack at the whip as they have only a split second to make decisions and honest one's I think. Without them we can't have football.

Firstly the slagging off of referees comes with the territory, makes great debate in the pubs afterwards, a debate lost with the introduction of video technology.

Secondly, i agree that some referees do take unfair criticism. I know it´s not an easy job and they are no less human than ourselves, therefore open to the odd mistake.

It´s the ones that make the really diabolical ones that deserve it, the ones who are too egotistical to rely on their assistants when they can´t admit they were in no position to see. There are too many of these around and i think it´s about time the governing bodies made sure that refs and assistants were one team and not seperate from each other.

If the assistant sees something the ref doesn´t his decision should become the final one. If they both see something and interpret it differently then obviously the refs decision should be the deciding factor.

Basically i think that Refs and assistants need to work in better harmony with each other as a team rather than hierachal individuals.

A good ref will no the rules and so do most of the older(18-70 ) fans.If a ref makes a wrong decision the fans will always give them abuse. A ref can sometimes be under a lot of pressure and will always make at least 2 mistakes in a game

Managers and players blame refs to divert attention away from their own mistakes. Fans blame them to avoid having to admit their team weren't good enough. Even though I'm an Arsenal fan, Arsene Wenger after the Carling Cup final is a classic example. The ref was blamed for missing Drogba being offside for his first goal and sending Adebayor off for nothing. Bottom line is, if Arsenal had put away more of the many chances they created they would have won easily, whatever Drogba did. Also, if Toure hadn't gone mental after having his shirt pulled the mass brawl wouldn't have happened and Adebayor wouldn't have had the opportunity to be sent off.

I remember when refs were amateurs and the call was for "professional refs who will get paid well to do the job properly because you can't trust an amateur to run a game played by professionals". Tellingly, one of the most vociferous speakers in favour of this was Alex Ferguson who is now one of the bitterest critics of referees. What's the next step Al?

you have got a good point, but some refereeing decisions are unforgivable.

poll's 3 yellow cards for example. or clattenburg in the leeds v cardiff game the other day, red cardded walton for diving when he was pollaxed and letr a leeds player off for a two footed tackle.

the problem alot of the time isnt bad decisions its inconsistency that pisses supporters off

they are the ones who make the calls. if they call a penalty against your team then you'll get mad. if the ref didn't call a penalty that favored your team then you'll get mad. if the ref doesn't call a foul or book a guy, then the other players will notice that he is not enforcing the rules and will try to get away with things because they feel that they will not get booked for fouls. also, they are the one who have to manage the game, the players, the coaches, and the fans. they have to control everything aspect of the game, if any thing goes wrong it is on their watch.

I agree. I wouldn't want to do the job. Unless I had 15 replays available from different angles!
