One of the suggestions for reducing sectarian strife in Iraq is distributing oil revenues to Shiites, Sunnis, and Kurds-- giving each a stake in the industry and a reason to support the government that keeps it flowing. It makes practical sense. But think: collective ownership of industry? Isn't that the essence of socialism?

And if socialism is a good idea for Iraq, why not here? Should the American people be given the huge profits of the oil industry? Sure would help with these steep gas prices!

They are for America as well. Socialistic entitlements increased far moe under Bush and the GOP congress than under Clinton.

Yet another case of cons whining about things they are more guilty of. HYPOCRITES!!!!

One reason would be that the oil in that country is isolated in one area. Since the country is made up of 2 very distinct religious regions and 3 cultural regions it is a good way to disperse the revenues. This would be the only industry that I could see being collectively owned. You have to reach peace before there can be any undrstanding. Once you have that you can move forward in a civilized manner and move towards the privatization of the industry.
As for America, no. You want a piece fo the oil industry buy stocks or energy mutual funds. Or go to work for them. Capitalism is a great thing, it afford you the opportunity to be a part of any industry you want....but it does require that you work for that opportunity. If you look at how far behind the tech curve socialist countries are it begins to lose it luster. Why do you want to take away small business that employs so much of America. What we need is less government, the red tape and corruption only worsens the problem. But in the case of Iraq that corruption is the lesser of the two evils right now

I think the oil revenue sharing plan, is to get them to start pumping oil instead of blowing themselves up.

I saw a huge oil reserve was recently discovered in Al-Anbar, by the U.S. ! If these jihadists had any sense, they would have put their time and effort into discovery instead of suicide.

When Bremmer was there, Iraq had a 15% flat tax.

Iraq will share oil revenue, get loans guaranteed by the world bank and IMF. It is socialism, and the Democrats oppose it ! twisted,,,, down the road Iraq will become more free market because its the only way to stay alive in that neighborhood.

It sure would have helped New Orleans and Louisiana, which gets NO money from all the oil and natural gas pumped from their waters in the Gulf of Mexico.

I bet they could have put even one days oil revenue to good use there.

edit: I'm not advocating socialism however, it has been shown to not work very well repeatedly over the years. So what we would be doing in Iraq is setting up a second rate social system that will inevitably fail, plunging Iraq into a real civil war.

Awesome, i cant wait for that to start in 10 or 15 years...

Socilaism is citizen and government owned agency and has no longer something to do with wages of workers till its a state owned agency like China has... it is why many oppose socialism ( administration and possession of agency by skill of government). strikes have no longer something to do with socialism. In a socialistic and communistic society, strikes does no longer be allowed.. I even have never heard a strike being called socialism by skill of everyone different than right here... I even have been a conservative and am an american worker and appreciate what workers have achieved for this united states of america. Your remark approximately conservatives hating American workers is a fabrication of the Democratic occasion which you will discover complicated to have self belief on account which you have been brainwashed by skill of this liberal BS.. Be an American first, study extra , and make up your guy or woman concepts somewhat of listening and beleiving this liberal fantasy...

Nice spin... have you really looked into how the oil is being divided up?

As regards to your gas price problem. Heres an idea... you invest BILLIONS of dollars in an offshore oil rig, process it, and put it in your car. You're free to do it. You just need to file some paper work with the government just like all the other oil companies.

Do you really think the oil is just flowing for free for the oil companies? Do you think they've been working in the red for nearly a decade and are now climbing out of it? What were the profits before these "record profits"? Have you even really given thought as to what you're saying?

You have an excellent point. The entire Iraq rebuilding effort has been a failure. We have given them the European model of government rather than a federal system, and we all know how European governments fail to provide the best for their people. You correctly assume that socialism in Iraq will fail, it has always failed when taken to extremes. The question now is what to do about it

There's a great disctinction between installing an economic system of redistribution and an economic system of equal distribution. You're reading this in a manner you want to hear.
