I have a 2000 Mustang (V6) and the check engine light is on. I took it do Advance auto to have it checked and they told me the code is P0411 and it says Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow.

I called a Ford dealer and they of course told me to bring it up there for them to charge me 200.00 just to look at the thing. They said it could be one of several different problems.

The car seems to be driving just fine but the light is bothersome. Could someone please tell me what might be wrong with the car.

Thank you!

I was told that it could be the air pump, but then I had someone check it and they said I don't have an air pump on the car......

I believe the correct code description on a Ford is "P0412 Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve A Circuit Malfunction"

This can actually be quite serious as it may indicate a serious EVAP system problem that can cause damage over time. The diagnostic for this is expensive because in additional to the normal electronic scanners and aids a "smoke test" may have to be done on the EVAP system. Dealers will have this equipment, many independent shops can't afford it.

So, bite the bullet and take it in.

PS

No, your car does not have an air pump.

There is nothing wrong with your car.

It is only a smog issue.

When is your next smog certificate due?

You can spend thousands of dollars for the dealer to turn your check engine light off for you.

Or you can wait until you need to submit the smog test and then get it done at only a fraction of the price you would spend if you give them money every time it comes on.

Also you can get financial assistance and extensions in most states after your car fails the smog test.

A check engine light on; is an automatic fail in a smog test.

But that is all it means....... It has nothing to do with the safety or life of your car.

Some people put a slice of black tape over the light until it is time for the smog check.

Trust me on this one, it will save you thousands of dollars over the years.

P.S. never take your car to *Aamco transmissions even though they promise to check your problem for free!
*They will damage your car and charge you for the repairs.

*****..EDIT..******

In answer to your Additional Details:

Your car engine does not contain an air pump.
A Secondary Air Injection System has nothing to do with your Primary Air Injection System.

If you Don't Believe Me.?.

Go ahead and get into dept.....$,$$$$...... Just to turn off a red light .

tha air injection system is basicly a air pump that is ran of the engine that sends fresh air either to the front of the catalytic to help bring it to operating temp, or directly in to the catalytic to help reduce emissions. This code could mean that the pump may be defective, the hoses or pipes from the pump is defective or a sensor that makes the decision on where to send the air is defective.
