Beckham is more popular.
Because most Americans are stupid. People in countries where football is not much popular who know Beckham think that they know what football is. What a disgrace. Maybe that's why they don't like football. They don't know much about true players like Ronaldinho or Zidane, but they heard of Beckham because he is married to ex Spice Girl Victoria and because of his modelling career.
That's like listening to Chingy and saying you know what real hip-hop is. So sad.
