I own a 1988 Olds Delta 88 and the steering is bad again! In March of last year I had the racknpinion replaced. The powersteering pump is not leaking one drop of fluid, but the steering is bad again. Sometimes it feels like I have no ps. at all and other times its normal. What could be the problem? I would like to be prepared when I take it to the mechanic.

Have the power assist valve/ switch checked. The pump might also be bad. The pump isn't hard to change, but they are messy to change. Also, check that the lines aren't leaking, sometimes they will drip onto hot parts and you won't see any drips on the ground. Check them while someone is moving the steering lock to lock.

Also check to make certain that your power steering pumps fan belt is tight enough.
