I have broadband through NTL (now Virgin Media) but we are not on cable, instead it is just through our BT line. Was told by PC World I needed a certain type of router for NTL (DSL?) but I think they assumed I was on cable - can I just get a 'normal' router. Can anyone recommend one?

I think what you are looking for is a BT HOME HUB.....

Hope this helps!

I have just helped my girlfriend with the installation of a new Netgear DG834G DSL Modem Router connecting to NTL / Virgin Media. It provides 4 physical connections and wireless. It is available from PC World (I recommend buying it online and collecting from store as it is a few pounds cheaper) at approximately £50 and comes with a two year warranty.

The first time you try to access the web you may / will be taken to a NTL / Virgin Media site and be prompted for PID and Password information (if you don't have this, contact them first, as you will need this to confirm connectivity for the first time with a new device / router).

Finally, update the firmware on the router to the latest non beta version:-

Version 3 - http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/DG834Gv3.asp
Version 2 - http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/DG834Gv2.asp

As that fixes a wireless issue.

I hope this helps and I wish I had asked the question the first time around, because as an IT Manager (and reasonably technical person), it took several calls to NTL to get this fixed and even then they didn't work it out.

User "maplesyrup" is correct - go to the Virgin Media shop and buy their wireless router for £40. It's a SpeedTouch 780, and it works fine. I have just got Virgin broadband over my normal telephone line, and the SpeedTouch works perfectly with both Windows and Linux. It's also a fantastic hardware firewall which works in the background.

To the user who said this:

"as an ex ntl faults person unless they changed policy in the last year there's no way you have broadband thru a bt line.
NTL do broadband thru their cable lines only or telewest phone cabled areas.
only way you've got broadband thru a bt line is NTL's aol package."

You're wrong. There is NO cable in my street, but I still have Virgin Broadband - I have achieved an actual download speed of 800kb/sec - ie almost 1Mb per second.

Ignore the answer from Naples, everyone who has a netgear knows what the default user name and password is. BIG DEAL you just change it to whatever you want. DOH

IYou need a modem router like one of the other answers says, netgear dg834g. I can definately recommend it. It'seasy to configure, better than my belkin wireless gaming adapter which was rubbish to configure. The router I just mentioned is 54mbps. I have mine in the dining room and my laptop is in the living room, 1 x 9" brick wall and a normal internal wall between. Laptop works fine upstairs too. Hope this helps.

you will need an ADSL router not a DSL router, I would recomend going through the virgin media website to purchase a wireless router from them they are normally quite cheap and you know that you are nt going to be sent the wrong type.

Otherwise a Netgear adsl wireless router, but be aware that the admin password for the router is widely known as it is the same on all of them so I would advise changing it if you don't want others to connect to it that is.

hey Having worked for NTL i could could say sky. fantastically now they are doing telephone, television and broadband for 26 quid. i imagine Virgin Media has some distance to flow before it establishes itself as a severe competitor to sky. believe me i don't like the massive fat cat businesses yet at modern-day sky has the perfect programs and the perfect bargains. i'm a huge fan of Mr Branson and could propose his airways any day of the week he only needs to exhibit NTL round which in time i'm particular he will. Oh and NTL's client service is crap and that i could understand ;) Regards idai
