the car does not have a traditional speedo cable. the instrument cluster only has electrical connections to the rear which i have tried cleaning with no result

It's not a traditional cable or traditional speedo. it has a speed sensor fitted, change that, buy the manual it will explain all.

speedometer cable may have a sharp kink in it. Follow it down from the speedometer head(instrument cluster to the drive)A smooth gentle curve is allowed. Only solution is a replacement of cable.

Make sure it is connected to the gearbox corrctly

Get a new cable for your speedometer.

it's a speed sensor on the gearbox find it and give it a slight tap that should do it.

sounds like yure head gasket check your oil if its white it iz
