What is wrong with it. Am I out of gas (which my gauge is at 1/4 but it is a old car) is it my engine, transmission, what?

if it is a manual transmission and a VERY old car, the linkage could be the trouble.

But clearly, there is an obvious disconnect between the tranny and the engine's throttle.

check trans oil it may be low. if it is fill it to the full line and see if that works but in order to fill it you have to have it running in park and the endine has to be warm.then check for leaks hopr this helps

try all gears mostly tranny is shot try changing the fluid and tranny filter but it might be to late sorry
