I was married for a few years a long time ago and kept my married name when I divorced for the sake of convenience as we had two young children together who were about the enter school. I'm getting married again soon and would like to take back my maiden name as well as my new husband's. For example Smith-Johnson, Smith being the maiden name. Can I do that when I get married or will I have to do that separately?

Of course you can take it back; it's your name.

However, keeping only your birth name and taking no one else's would mean that you keep your own identity instead of it being (partially) subsumed under your husband's. Think about it: has he discussed the possibility of taking your name too? Why not? Although we think that we've made huge gains for the status of women, patriarchy continues on, and we often don't even question it or see it.

Taking the husband's name originates in the idea of ownership of women in marriage and women not having any identity of their own. Why are we continuing this aspect of inequality?

Don't worry about the children. My mother kept her maiden name, as she is half Arab and this is the common practice in the Middle East. I have my mother's last name and my sister has my father's. Sometimes people thought our parents were divorced (big deal) but we had no other problems.

Congrats on your marriage.

Do you have to Change your name?
No a name change is a personal decision. You are free to keep your name if that's what you prefer. Traditionally many brides change their last names to their husband's. Give some careful thought to what name feels best for you!

If I am getting married how do I legally change my name?
The first step is often the easiest in the whole name change process. In most states and jurisdictions when a couple gets married, they also get a marriage license. On that marriage license is a line for your new name. Write it in, and you're done!

When I change my name is the procedure the same across the United States?
Although the process is similar the forms will vary from county-to-county. Your best bet is to contact you local county clerk to find out the specific laws that govern where you live.

Yes. You can change your name to anything you want, it will be hyphenated. Your maiden name will come first, and then your new married name.

Your maiden call is often an excellent selection too.
