Then it beeps and switches itself off. It is as if the radio does not realise the engine is running and the saftey mechanism to stop it draining the battery kicks in. Any ideas how I can correct this?

What Neil said

The radio is as you thought, switching off to stop the battery getting drained. It does not realise that the engine is running and so switches off after 20 minutes as it is meant to do.

The ignition on power feed is at fault. Probably in a connector block in the wiring to the radio. It would probably take only a few minutes to fix, but your car is more than likely under warranty, so let the dealer fix it for you.

Car radios have two power feeds, one which is always live, and one which is only live when the ignition is on. It appears that the second of these isn't working on your car. Unless your car was registered in the first week of 04-reg it should be under warranty still, so take it to your local Renault dealer and get them to investigate.

Is the car still under warranty? If it is then take it back to a dealer and get them to rectify it.

I don't have any answers for your immediate question but had to mention the bonnet problem. Did you see Watchdog last evening and does it affect your car?
