My son is now 9 months old and I started feeding him toast and grape jam about a week ago. He now has a rash on his bum that appears to be sore (he squirms alot when I try and wipe him) is this an allergic reaction and should I stop feeding it to him, or is it just his body getting used to new foods?

Typically an allergic reaction will produce a rash that is spread all over the trunk of the child. What you described is most likely just a result of his body getting used to the new foods, and it does change the acidity of his bowel movements which can cause irritation. If in doubt call the doctor, but it sounds like it's nothing to worry about, a little diaper rash ointment should take care of it :)

could be but i would think the rash would have come out sooner than a week. don't use wipes, they leave a residue that will irritate the rash further. take him to the sink and use water and if needed a soft wet cloth and Penaten cream. If you think it is reaction to food stop that food and try something else. Possibly look at acid content. Honey with toast? You can try the food again later and see if he has another reaction as long as it's just a small rash and there are no breathing difficulties or concerns

allergies and a baby that small, the reaction would have been within 20 to 30 minutes.

It's probably a diaper rash, like others have mentioned. Solid food changes the composition of the bowel, and that could affect skin balance, as well, the sugar in the jam (which is VERY high in sugar) could have triggered a yeast overgrowth in the intestine. Could be teething, could be a virus, could be a reaction to sitting around and moving more (my kids always got a rash on their hiney when they started moving around the house more and sitting down, because the carpet. Once they got used to it, they were fine)

I don't think its the food! is he taking any medicine? my child had that problem a couple of times and i was very scared because this rash was ugly, it looked like i didn't change her in hours, the nurse said its the bad stuff, sometimes if they are taking any medicine when they do #2 when you don't catch it the second they go it will cause a rash cause all that bad stuff the infection is coming out but the baby's skin is so sensitive that it causes them to get a rash very fast. and yes the nurse was right and it also could be the food that he is getting use to it because it happened again when she got sick you will notice your self when they get sick.but then again baby's are all diff rent so well that was my answer. then yes the diffrent foods c an also cause that rash.

Trial and error, just try a different flavor of jam or try just butter or nothing at all and see how is bum reacts to that. Maybe he just has to get used to the berries in the jam.

Your baby is REALLY cute by the way, I wish more moms would creat a Yahoo 360 page that show off pics of their babies like I did. If you are wondering what I am talking about look at my profile and click the 360 link.

If it's just on his bum I don't think it's food allergy but check with his pediatrician. If you started to give him the food a week ago, how long after did the rash show up? If it was a few hours later maybe but if a few days later probably not.

I think its a diaper rash, here's a old fashion remedy
- instead of using baby wipes try this, in place of the baby wipes use ivory soap on a wash cloth get real soapy then rinse off,( it will kill any germs or bacteria, that may cause a infection) and put something on the baby to protect him, like a mixture of cornstarch & vaseline make sure you mix together put in a something small container, so you dont have to keep mixing.

apply and repeat with the ivory soap and mixture at every diaper changing. this we take it away right away.

Could be a reaction... it looks kinda like its sunburned all around his little bum? Has he been pooping more than usual?

My son has that reaction to blueberries, and it takes a few days for it to show up. I didn't connect the 2 at first because he'd been eating blueberries just fine.

A week is a bit long though, is there something else you've given him thats new?

It could be just a diaper rash. Stop feeding him that and see if it goes away. Then try again and see if it comes back. If in doubt take him to a doctor.

Usually allergic reactions start on the face, mouth or lips.
It could just be diaper rash, maybe he's going #2 too much?
Use anything with Hydrocortizone it will clear it right up.
