Hello,

My hamster escaped this morning and I can't find him anywhere in my apt. I can hear him, but I really need to catch him. I have a baby and it makes me nervous. I bought a humane trap, but is there anything else I can do to lure him out? TIA Orange

set food traps all over the house. take a smallish box or deep bowl and place some food inside. on the outside of your "traps" make a ramp that is easy for the critter to walk up on, and a small trail of three or four tiny pices of a sweet treet leading up to the drop off.. Most of the time the little buggers will jump into the bowls/boxes and as long as the sides are high enough that he cant jump out he will be caught. Other then that just wait. I had two dwarf hampsters chew out of their cage last year twice. The first time the traps worked for me but the second time they wised up and it took me allmost two weeks to catch them both!! When i was a kid my two hampsters got loose. One was found in the wall with a nest of babies (mom was mad) and the second one my mom found in her bed. She was verry mad! Not a thought you want i know. sorry....

Can you hear which room he's in? If so, try to close off that room so you at least limit where he can go.

Hamsters are nocturnal, so try putting his cage on the floor of that room, door open, his favorite treats inside. They feel safe in their nests. Check the cage every 20 minutes or so to see if he's wandered back in. Leave it that way over night and you may find him back in there in the morning.

Your hamster will not harm your baby. He's probably more scared than you are!

You can also do the "bucket trick", where you put his favorite treats in a bucket, with a stack of books or something to make stairs to it. The theory is that he'll go for the treats, fall in and not be able to get back out. Just make sure the fall is not so much as to injure him and that the bottom of the bucket has enough bedding in it to give him a soft landing.

Good luck finding him!!

OK...if you can hear him, then go to the area of the house he is in and block it off. If you hear him in another room then shut the door and put a towel in the crack underneath...you would be amazed at what hamsters can do! Then, hopefully you don't have a lot of furniture in the area, if you do then this will take a while. Look under all the furniture until you find him/her...do NOT wear shoes or walk. Glide your feet on the floor. You don't want to smash him!

OK...if you don't know what area he is in, use process of elimination. Apartments are generally small, so check each room a few times and block ANY entries...even the slightest crack. Narrow down the rooms to one or 2...if you can't find him but you know he is in one of those rooms then out out a slice of food (yummy!) and wait....

Good Luck!
