I'm not sure if you're in school or out, but the first thing to do is go to school and major in journalism. Get on the schools newspaper and cover sports, but don't just cover sports do other things too so you can be well-rounded. If you've already done that and are looking for a job cover the Penguins. I would contact the sports editor and ask are there any openings. If there aren't tell him you are willing to be a sports freelancer. You might not cover the penguins, but it will get your foot in the door and they will be able to see your work. Newspapers can always use freelancers or bloggers. Try websites like Journalismjobs.com to check for openings at papers.

Sports reporting is fun, alot more fun than talking to politicians. To be a sports reporter in print, you need to be a snazzy writer. Since how well you write willl carry the reader beyond the first paragraph. If you want to go into broadcast journalism, you need to think more creatively about the images you would present to the viewer. As far as print, having a journalism degree is not nearly as important as writing well. Because of that a history or english degree are acceptable in the field. If you want to go into broadcasting, then you should go to journalism school because you really can't practice always being in front or behind of a camera unless you are in front or behind of a camera. If you don't have a really strong talent for journalism, you could still make it by knowing the right people.

sports journalist might be a calling, being a reporter is not so much anymore. You can do an internship in prostitution and any good networks organization will take you in as a journalist after that.
