CRT monitors have more circuits, so what you are talking about might be magnetic fields not radiation. There is some talk/speculation of induced magnetic fields (such as the ones produced by high voltage power lines) causing brain tumors. But again this hasn't been substantiated. An average person takes in quite a bit of radiation from different appliances. I think you'll be fine with your CRT monitor.

HI there,

First answer is YES. CRT monitors do produce radiation, and ten years ago you could get a nice headache after working a whole day in front of one of them.

However, you could buy add-on screen filters that eated up all that radiation. And lately, all CRT included already the filter coating at the outer glass surface...

You should not have problems if the monitor is "new". By the way, some urban legends say that placing some plants near the CRT will reduce emitted radiation (any answer on this?)

In all cases, higher refresh-rates (70Hz and up) for LCD displays will allow for a better, more relaxed viewing of the display, if you intend to work for hours in front of your PC...

Finally, some LCDs use white LEDs for backlighting. Depending on the technology used in the LEDs, some UV light might appear, but LCD displays do include some filtering, too...

Have fun!

The monitor does produce a very small amount of radiation. Your level of exposure is not likely to ever be a hazard to your health, even if you were to hug the monitor for an hour a day. Yes, it's that low a radiation level.
There are many perfectly good reasons for switching to an LCD monitor, however. One, you get a better image. Two, they require less energy to run - a bonus in these times of legitimate concern about our runaway power consumption. And from a health/environmental standpoint, there is a lot of toxic lead used in CRT monitors as well as other toxic subsances. Disposal of said equipment is complicated by the need to safely handle these toxins, and it would certainly be best if fewer of them were purchased in the first place - 'cause all of 'em are eventually going to fail and have to be disposed of.

So my bottom line is I encourage you to replace that CRT monitor with up-to-date gear and be sure the old monitor is properly disposed of and not just tossed in a ditch somewhere.

A CRT monitor does produce small amounts of radiation, this is why your eyes hurt after long use of them, the radiation isnt harmful unless you are using your monitor 24/7. LCD screens dont produce the same radiation, and do not hurt your eyes after prolonged use as the CRT monitors did.

I think you are safe, as long as you sit in front of your monitor. Radiation there is minimal. I believe the stronger more harmful rays are emitted from CRT more to the rear and sides of the tube stem. I don't think you have a problem unless you sit in front of the PC 8 or 12 hrs a day. In offices they do not put a co-worker directly behind another work station's CRT. Hey lets face it, all us casual users would have deep six'ed it by now. I don't think LCD is harmful...or everyone would have wrist cancer by now.
I don't have any tech. stuff to prove that, but I repaired TV's for a lot of years, and in the service, worked around some pretty powerful raydar equip. I'm an old man now, and I don't have any trace of cancer.
I have come to believe anyone can get cancer, but I think some folks are more prone to it. Don't worry, have fun, you're going to die no matter what you do. On the other hand you're smart to find out about such things. But, for God's Sake!...Don't ever Smoke! Nicotine is
a proven killer!
