I work in a great office, we all work so well together. I have a commute for 1.5 hours -2.5 hours a day, each way. I work for a large financial firm with positions close to my homw. This office was good for a start and now that I have proven my capabilities, I want to move closer to home. How do I ask my manager to approve a transfer request?

1st, Start out by asking your manager if he/she knows of any openings in the office that is close to home, you might even have jobs posted on the company website.

2nd, Just come right out and ask for the transfer, but state that it's not because of the people or company, you want a shorter commute.

3rd, Most companies, if you have proven your capabilities, will more than gladly place you in a position that will advance and get you closer to home as long as they have an opening availiable, all you need to do is just ask.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Depending on the job it might not be possible. It depends on how much face to face daily contact you need to have with others. I know people in my group (also finance) that transferred to another office and they ended up being treated like that were "outsourced to india". They were out of the loop and ended up in more of a support role. The company also based their pay/bonus on their new location and they didn't like the cut in salary.
