The less she is reminded of her advancing years the better, do yourself a favour get her a card with happy 39 th birthday on it.

Your being there and wishing her a happy birthday should be enough for any mother. If you feel that you should do anything else, then take her out to lunch or dinner. Most adults don't really require any special gift type thing, particularly once they reach 40. However, you know your mother better than anybody. If you must buy her something, then I suggest flowers in an attractive vase. I have never met a woman of any age that did not like flowers as a gift, particularly when they come with a nice vase. Just remember NOT to go cheap on your mother.

Here's something creative that will be appreciated and you will have fun doing:

Make up a crossword puzzle and have all the hints be personal inside moments and jokes that only you two would know about. Put it on a poster board and add some clipart and some pictures to it!

The crossword puzzle could be time consuming and a bit frustrating ... you could do the same idea with a WORDSEARCH or WORDFIND puzzle.

Put your computer skills to work! Use Excel, get clipart from Yahoo Images Search, copy them, and reformat them, use a gluestick to put on posterboard.

Use graph paper, and pictures from magazines if you are not as good on the computer, and it will give it more of a homemade feeling.

Make a coupon book. No joke, no matter how old you are, this is good. Just make sure you do what the coupons say. Some examples: Coupons for the following: foot massage, dish washing, washing her car, polishing her nails, a hug, etc.
Or you could make her breakfast in bed or really wash her car thoroughly inside and out. One year when I was broke I drawed a picture of my mom. I have a little talent, it wasn't that good but it was recognizable as being her. I did my best. She still has it and that was when I was 17 and twenty five years later she still has it.

I agree with the first post! If I were your mom, I would love that and if you also do some other housework, like clean the toilets, fold the laundry, clean up the mess you make in the kitchen afterwards, etc...and don't forget the homemade card! I love those! Oh wait, it's not my birthday...

when strapped for a present for mom, i go into my 'archive' of stuff i have made before, like paintings, drawings, etc. then i take a frame from something I already have and pop it in. try and think of something she loved when you showed her. im 34 and a mom myself now. moms love that stuff more than something you bought from the store.
or: if you have clear glycerin soap bars in the house, chop them up and melt them in the microwave. add a little food coloring and perfume, stir. pour into something round (like an empty CLEAN frozen orange juice can), let it sit in the fridge for about an hour, pop it out and cut into soaps.
or: find a cool round rock the size of a tennis ball in the yard. take a picture of you or you and her and cut it to fit on the top. elmers glue the top of the rock really goopy and put the photo on it, let it dry and paint glue over the whole thing again and let it dry. give it to her for a paperweight.
or: go online and search for a website that tells history on your birthdate. look hers up, print and frame.

Put together a collage of photo's over the years on a big poster board explaining all she has meant to you and it always helps to end with that she is still a beautiful woman.....good luck

You could take an index card and write "This coupon is redeemable at any time for whatever you need me to do for you. Happy Birthday, Mom.

You could have a night out together, and have her pick her present there, or you could just have dinner. OR, if you're low on cash, make her dinner and serve it as if you're a waiter in a fancy restaurant. It made my mom happy!

Make her a card with memories that recall why you love her ( and don't mention 40 ) and let her know that no matter where you go in life that no one can take those memories or the love from your heart
