Who ever files the complaint is the plaintiff.
Then during the divorce process, who ever files a motion for let's say, visitation rights--that party is the petitioner and the other party is the respondent.
Anytime during the proceedings you can be either the petitioner or repsondent. But if you filed the complaint, you will always be the plaintiff.
