Well.. actually they are! All of these things teach our children control, deduction, reasoning, Patience and causation! All of which are an important part of becoming a productive part of society. If you are a student, you will learn this, if you are not a student or have not been one for years you should have already learned this.
It takes a lot of energy for someone to take a simple trip to the market. It is frustrating just being able to maneuver your vehicle in traffic much less around the crowds of people when you get there. All of these things (Control, Deduction, Reasoning etc) are things that help us get from point A to point B. I suppose if you battle against these things when learning them you may miss the point completely and this is whats wrong with the majority of youths now a days, but you get the picture!
Math isn't just about numbers! It is about the inevitable path we take to get to the answer we are looking for! It gives us the ability to figure, and deduct and reason, situations that would otherwise be lost to us without these abilities.

have to mold their brains into understanding, they will figure it out. its the parents that need to do that
