I have a red poinsettia in my kitchen from Christmas time. This was the frist time I've ever gotten one. Is it appropriate to keep the plant in my kitchen all year? Do I plant it outside in the Spring? What do other people do with them after Christmas?

Poinsettias are tropicals and will die if left outside during a freeze. I lived in Mexico for several years and was surprised to find that Poinsettias are not at all like the small compact bushes we find here on our store shelves. The actually turn into more of a vine in their natural habitat and grow very long runners that emerge from the tops of the tall trees.

Most people, in non tropical areas (High humidity and mild to very warm temperatures) toss them out once the blooms begin to fall. The red part of the bloom is really a modified leaf and only the yellow part is a true bloom. If allowed to dry out for even a short period of time, the plant will drop most leaves to provide for the core parts of the plant. This leaves unsightly stems and it is easier to just wait until next year to pick up a new one.

When the poinsettia starts to die, cut back all the leaves and stems to about 3 inches, put the poinsettia in and the container it's in into a paper bag and put them in a dark place like a closet. Around October put it back out and water it and it should come right back.

The poinsettias and the Easter lily are so deadly to cats that take even a small piece of leaf that I only does no longer have them in my living house. both maximum poisonous of flora which could impact your cat.
