my mother has a baby who just turned 7 months and she feeds him everything from ice cream to pizza and he couldnt be healthier or stronger. Now, my baby is 3 months old and I am debating as to whether or not to let her try some food. Like when I'm eating things like applesauce should I let her try some. I'm just looking for some opinion. Thanks

I say yes. My son is 11 months , he's last appointment his doc said he is doing great. Growing very healthy, not fat not skinny, just right. I started giving him applesauce at 3 months and slowly other baby food.

I think that people go overboard with all the new research and what we should feed babies & what not. I'm raising my son the way my mother raised me and her mother her.

I didn't start my kids on solids until they were reaching for it and showing interest. This was 5-7 months old. I do not feed them full meals until 12 months so up to then it is all just tasting and exploring. Some research shows that delaying the introduction of solids until at least 7 months can prevent food allergies. Babies should be relying on mamma milk or formula as their sole sourse of nutrition for the full first year so solids are not necessary.

When I do start solids I generally do not buy baby food- I just give baby wholesom table foods instead (saves money too). My second baby's first food was avocado. She loved baked plain potato with some steamed carrot mashed in it. My new baby loves soft cooked green beans. You just have to see how their gag reflex is. If you wait long enough to introduce solids this reflex is alomst non-existent so they can eat soft-cooked foods easily.

I'll give you some links. I am so happy I delayed introducing solids. My little girl loves to eat healthy foods and she never had an ounce of rice cereals or any of those other simple starches. There are many reasons why delaying solids can be good for future health :)

I agree 100% with 'I see you Lynn'

Reguardless of what has been done in the past 50 years, we know better now. Introducing solids so early is risky in so many ways, many of which may not immediatly show up.

I mean, would you turn your 6 month olds carseat front-facing? Its the same type of thing.

I may have science backing my stance on solids, but i definatly don't do what i do because its "by the book".

It's just common sense to wait until the child is eager and reaching for food, and to start on table foods. Who started the idea of starting babies on food as soon as humanly possible? Baby food companies! They make more money the earlier parents start solids. They don't care about your childs health, thats your responsability.

It was trial and error for me at first because I had so many people telling me to start him from an early age, but in hindsight waiting was the best thing I could have possibly done.

He eats anything and everything readily now, and we never had to deal with 'texture issues'. Why start a child on purees only to change to table foods in a short time? And what did people do 200 years ago? Im sure they didn't waste time grinding up food for thier infants, thats what breasts are for!

I mean, a lick here and there after 4 or 5 months won't hurt anything. But do yourself a favor and wait until your baby is ready for table food and start with all whole foods. Theres no nutrtional need for solids for at least the first 6 months.

I know its exciting and you can't wait to play, but its really better for your baby in the long run to wait. Whats the rush? They grow up too fast anyway!

Your baby doesn't "need" to eat solids until they are at least 6 months old. Some babies show an interest in trying out new foods at earlier ages and that is ok. But personally I would not give solids to a three month old, they generally have no interest in eating foods at that young of an age and they need to be getting their nutrition from breast milk or formula. Baby foods and cereal are fillers, fun for baby to try when they get older but not necessary yet!

My son just turned 3 months also and the doc had him on cereal from 8 weeks because he ate alot. my daughter who is now 3 and perfectly healthy started rice cereal at 2-3 months and jar at 4 months. I think im waiting for jar food until he is 4 months as well but i would definatly think giving your baby rice cereal would be fine, i wouldn't go as far as ice cream and things like that, babys dont know the difference and love fruits and veggies allow them to eat healthy as long as possible befor junk food is all they want.

Keep in mind, every baby is different. Let her try very soft foods. Being unable to properly chew will cause larger portions to be swallowed. In turn, that will mean larger foods to digest on a young tummy. Followed by larger waste to be expelled by a tiny bum. Enjoy the feedings of baby foods and formula, they grow up fast and start to ask for money and car keys to go get pizza with friends.

My mom when she watched my baby in the early months fed her bananas, daps of icecream and sweet stuff, when it came time to give her cereal and start baby foods she wouldn't eat it!!! she wanted the "real stuff". Of course my baby got 2 teeth at a time each month starting consequtively from 3 months on.

you can give her applesauce and soft mushy foods like try potatoes and yogurt, anything with the consistency of baby food. don't give the baby a lot of preservatives. make your own baby foods with a blender or a food processor. they are healthier for them. use fresh beans and peas you can even do fruit too.

its not really advisable for a baby to eat too much sweets at that age...better let the baby eat purely veggies and fruits..more healthy for the baby and will make the baby be trained not to eat junk food as he/she grows older

Soft baby foods, fruits, vegetables and meats. Where did you get the idea not to feed her? It is past time.
