Most people's feelings and thoughts about themselves fluctuate somewhat based on their daily experiences. The grade you get on an exam, how your friends treat you, ups and downs in a romantic relationship-all can have a temporary impact on your well being.
Your self-esteem, however, is something more fundamental than the normal "ups and downs" associated with situational changes. For people with good basic self-esteem, normal "ups and downs" may lead to temporary fluctuations in how they feel about themselves, but only to a limited extent. In contrast, for people with poor basic self-esteem, these "ups and downs" may make all the difference in the world.

Self esteem is knowing our own individual value and capabilities in a positive way, when such positive knowledge is backed by the reality.... but when it is not backed by the reality, it is arrogance. It is self esteem that generates self confidence to aim and work for an achievement.

Esteem... dignity...is something like Ego. When it is Swabhiman it is called self respect which is important to come up in life. If it is Durabhiman it is bad and blocks the progress or keeps the friends away... leading to loneliness.

SELF ESTEEM - in another way spells confidence, its the make belief of knowing your limits and how to make your ends meet - its an upgrading of oneself to the catergory of being sensible, fully in control of knowing one's means and letting out the right steam to get to where one wants to be -Ayesha Ahmed

a combination of self-respect (you earn that)
and efficacy (how competent are you to solve problems) Both are earned, not magically gotten. Unlike Oprah's "secret" you can't fake it until you make it. The truth will eventually trip you up, the more you fake it, the harder you fall.
Build self respect, by being respectful, build efficacy by working at things that are uncomfortable for you.

self-worth has to do with feeling sturdy about your self, and no one else is in touch. Self know is feeling sturdy about your self to the point the position human beings know you as well, and also you dont allow others deal with you badly.
