3x2 = 6
(6 + 1)2 = 14
(14 + 2)2= 32
(32 + 4)2 = 72

They started with $72.

$3 = left over

.5x = 3
x = $6 left for paper plates

.5y = 6 + 1
y = $14 left for desserts

.5z = 14 + 2
z = $32 left for salads

.5a = 32 + 4
