Depends on where you need to use the phone and what services and features you want. If you select the plan with most minutes for the $ (usually T-Mobile) but that company doesn't have good coverage in your area then you're out of luck for making or receiving calls.

T-Mobile and Cingular use GSM technology for their networks. Newer (multi band) GSM phones are generally compatible with most GSM networks worldwide - a consideration if you plan to travel outside the USA. T-Mobile plans usually have more minutes for the $. Cingular allows you to roll over unused minutes.

Verizon and Sprint use CDMA technology for their networks. CDMA phones generally only work on a specific provider's network. Verizon phones don't work anywhere except where Verizon has coverage. Likewise for Sprint. Don't plan to use a CDMA anywhere except the USA.

Get a pay as you go telephone. Then no costs and in case you loose the telephone or injury it you could pass and get yet another for low priced with a similar variety and you will choose for months and not have a invoice. each provider costs one hundred fifty to 3 hundred for early termination. or you could cancel the contract and build up a repor with the agency affirming you haven't any longer recieved the provider it is written interior the contract i.e. poor reception interior the washing room or the closet.
