Trials can actually take place without a jury if the defendant does not demand one. Usually this would be like traffic or small claims courts.

well, the smallest is to let the judge make the directed verdict, then it is just 1 person. if you want a jury of your peers to hear, they use 6 or 12.

As far as I know the smallest they will allow is 12 juror's. They also have to have 2 backups available.

I believe it is six. But where there are only six jurors, the decision must be unanimous. The source I've cited below from the law school at the University of Missouri - Kansas City has more information.
