so that people can donate some of their money to worthy causes who need it!

It gives the donor a sense of doing something to help the cause of their choice. If all charities were disbanded and the support maitained by government, taxes would have to rise to cover the costs and the tax payer would have no say on where the money was spent. Charities also employ a lot of people with a lot of skills. Children 1st, Oxfam etc have people with great expertise in their chosen field.

There is not enough money to go around for scientists to pursue dedication for a particular disease to try and find out the causes, and off course new drugs to help combat a disease.

I am in the process of setting up a DD for £5 per month for the Motor Neurone Society in memory of my late ex-husband.

But every bit of charity is important whoever you support!

Charities help people who cannot otherwise afford assistance (e.g. Hospice). Also, there are many animal charities for us animal-lovers out there. I love the fact I can donate money to my favorite animal shelter and know that they will neuter cats/dogs for people who cannot afford to get it done. I also volunteer for Hospice and love the fact my patients can get free nursing care, spiritual guidance, etc. and not have to worry about who is paying the bill. All donations you make to charities can be claimed on your taxes also.
