When homebuilders set their tubs, they generally just mix up a batch of plaster and pour a big 2'x3' glob onto the floor. Then they put the tub in and level it. When the plaster dries, the tub is set level and straight. Just leave room for the drainpipe!

Yeah, like the one person said you don't really worry about leveling the floor, just put shims under the tub to level it. If it leaves a crack between the tub and the floor at the front the trim will cover it up.

If you have a plastic tub the plaster or mortar in addition to the shims will help keep the floor of it from popping up and down when you stand in it, especially if it is a cheap plastic tub. You don't really have to worry about that with a steel tub.

Be a little careful with the mortar or plaster. Normally you want to leave a couple inch clearance hole around the drain so that if the drain of the tub ever leaks, the water doesn't get soaked up by the sub-floor and rot out the subfloor. Instead it will just fall to the crawl space or onto the drywall of the ceiling of the floor below. It's better to ruin and have to replace the drywall than to rot the sub-flooring.

use a ledger strip on the tub. Put a level on the tub until it sits level. From the side of the tub that will face the wall measure to the floor. This measurment is how high the ledger strip should be. The finished (skirted) side of the tub sits on the floor, the side to the wall sits on top of the ledger strip. use a 2x4 about 4' 6" long and make sure you nail it into the studs.

if the flooring is already installed, then you can use a latex leveling compound, available at the home center. if you're installing directly over the floor joists, use wood shims.
