Secularism and democracy are the foundation of Indian society.
These must be continued for making better India.

Good question. Well, India may improve 3 basic things to make a better homogenous and stronger India in all respect to compete with the developed countries:

1. General Education of the common people.

2. Minimizing the social discriminations among different religions and sects.

3. Improving relationship with its neighbors at least in the sectors of businesses, education and development.

I believe that the common Indian people are simple and prone to be positively molded. But they are in general a bit less confident about themselves and protective in nature (perhaps, due to the colonization impacts of about 800 years by the Muslims and the British). India can do better if the common Indian feels better as Indian rather than as of different states and religions.

If you mean India become the number one country of the world,that will not be realistic.If possible will take long time.Because India get better other country also get better.
