You need to know the difference between theatre and performance art.
You know what theatre is. But Performance Art is (way over simplified) living art. It is basically a painting or sculpture (what is traditionally thought of as art) but alive. The "art" becomes the performance. It is generally thought provoking, shocking and evokes emotions that traditional art does.
A (not great, but readily available) example of performance art can be found in the movie She's All That. Freddie Prince attends a performance artist's show.
The performance artist is the performer in the performance art.
An actor works from a script generally written by someone else and performs it in the context of a play.
It can be confusing because techically a play is a work of "art." But performance art and theatre are two seperate mediums. And the Performance artist, and the actor are just the vessles for each.

While an actor 'acts' out a part already written as dictated, a performing artist has his own agenda. He writes his performance in order to convey his own ideas.
The performance itself is the work of art, and the performing artist is the medium, or material, from which this work of art is made.

A performing artist is just an artist who does some sort of performance, while an actor is just an actor (an actor is under the "performing artist" umbrella!)

Acting is just one skill of Performing Arts.
Anything physical or vocal in front of an audience is classed as performing arts.
Eg: Pe, Acrobatics, Gymnastics, Singing, Dancing etc.
Performing arts, is also learning about set design, lighting design, vocals, physical movement. But that's all theatre related.
