We have been here less than a 100 million years ago (approximately).
and Bravo! We have poisoned our atmosphere, burnt a hole in the ozone layer, toxicated as many water resources as possible, and to top it all, we are competing with each other to posses the maximum number of nuclear missiles. I dont know why they call it a "deterent" as each one is controlled by the very same human hands that is yet to learn to live in harmony with the rest of the nature; and it takes just one sick mind, to press the button that could wipe off life from the face of the earth. Surprisingly none of the so called lesser beings have achieved this kind of progress and yet we call our selves the masters of the planet or perhaps the 'UNIVERSE'!

Well, i dont see any donkey scientists, so......

But you did say that we are fairly young as a species. We as a species are still learning, and it will take time to learn how to do things better (although we have come a long way). Thats the great thing, we are learning from our "mistakes". With out those mistakes, and having the brains to realize that changes have to be made is what makes humans great.

Too much of anything is most often a bad thing. Too many rats destroys the earth by eating all crops, too many dinosaur farts must have had an impact on the ozone layer since cow farts do, animals moving into areas where they are superior takes over that area and destroys what was once natural there.

Bottom line, we're not superior there's just way to many of us. About 6.6 billion if I remember it correctly. If there was less of us we wouldn't do the harm that we do.
The earth has survived far worse plagues than humanity, I think it will survive us too. The only reason why humans worry about the earth is because they want to keep living on it. It's a shame since the earth would do better without us.

The notion that human beings consider themselves the masters of this planet is really pitiable. The only superiority we have, as compared to the other animals, is the human brain which in a way is slightly better due to which we have been able to develop languages making us capable of expressing our thoughts and experience for the benefit of other human beings. Thus we have succeeded in developing scientific knowledge which is the back bone of our civilisation of today. The ills emerging out of our developments do exist, as also pointed out in the question under consideration. But there seems to be no immediate relief in sight, as there are so many elements which do not subscribe to the idea of use of knowledge for modelling the present day world. There are people who can take us back to the dark ages. Thus the struggle seen among the different sections of the people will continue but ultimately what will prevail depends on how the humans tackle their problems. After the second word war all have pinned their hope on the UN. Till date the world agency is in place and is doing good work in the areas of peace, health, education, culture etc.In spite of all the problems let us hope that the marginal superiority of human beings will be used to make our earth a better place to live.We should also be very sympathetic to other animals as they also posses life as we do.

We may have the power to manipulate resources the earth gives us, and destroy anything, including the earth, because of our brain,..but we are not superior to all creatures. How long would one last against a Shark in open waters, a Tiger in it's element, or even against a swarm of Bees? Even a creature as small as a Tick can kill a man. Rattle Snakes venom has changed in order to more rapidly kill it's prey. A Cockroach can survive a Nuclear blast. We may THINK we are Superior, but maybe it's just Man's Ego. We are the Master Manipulators.

I don't think all humans think they are superior, lol*, just the ones running the world! Lol* I don't know, I mean, I just don't think people are all that bad. Yes, many men in power are war minded, but that's the way men are wired. They are fighters, protectors, and territorial. Ants are just as vicious - haven't you ever started an ant war with a piece of bolognia? LOL* Yes, we used our unique reasoning and thumb power to create SUV's, and other Western evils to speed up global warming, lol*, but I'm not so sure the human race is entirely terrible for doing it. Surely there are other species on earth who have done damage to their own environment or bodies. They just haven't had the numbers in population to have such an enormous impact. After all, we didn't set out to hurt the planet. We just happen to be lucky enough to be able to flourish on this planet, and we're no smarter or dumber than any other creature living here - just lucky that evolution was so kind to us.

Also I'm not so sure nature lives in what we may think of as harmony! Lol* I mean, I don't see people living in huts in Africa without some of them getting eaten by a lion once in a while - well, that would be living in harmony with nature wouldn't it? I'm not a hunter, but why is it when a lion kills a dear for food it's nature's way, but when man kills a deer for food, and maybe to hang the head on his wall, it's cruel? I imagine lions are quite proud of the Zebra they kill, especially when they get a fat one. Like a kitty who brings a dead bird as a gift to his owner.

I mean what is it that we expect from people? We are animals after all, and not the only animals to hoard, build, fight, or kill. I think people are doing what they are supposed to do - arguing out points of view included! :)

We have very little knowledge and understanding of the universe and even of this planet earth. There are many mysteries of life and death, directly related to us, but we are as ignorant as any other being or animal, we don't know from where we come or where is our final destination.
Sitting in this small pond we feel superior we feel great, it has no meaning, and I am sure even the apes would not consider us superior.

A person who conquers life is superior to the other who has not done so. Human beings have been vested with brain, the most powerful tool in human body with which we can conquer other elements in the Universe. It is with positive utilization of brainpower that man has created ships, aeroplanes, satellites, electronic gadgets and cages for animals. Though animals are very powerful as compared to human beings but with brain man puts them in cage, zoo or trains them to follow his commands. So human beings are superior to any other race or object of nature.

In what way superior? while its true the Human appetite for destruction knows no bounds within the animal world the Lion has yet to lay with the lamb. In other words natures natural way is anarchy and survival of the fitest. It's hardly the peace and harmony you imagine it to be.

I agree with u man
But most humans wont admit they r less superior to all other beings
That bcoz humans arent content with living just like their forefathers who wer cavemen and lived on followin the laws of nature. We always want more. The rich want to become richer, the poor want to earn a living. WANT WANT WANT and needs.
what makes humans special is the ability and want to learn more and more.Curiosity is human nature
well dont u think we've achieved something man?
With every new and major progress made we hav to sacrifice something whther knowingly or unknowingly.
AND U HAVE TO ADMIT THAT WE HAVE MADE PROGRESS.And we've lost a lot of things.

we don't actually know ... but we assume

we have done the research to find out that of all the known living things on planet earth humans have the greatest capacity for complex thinking ... but that by no means makes us smarter ... and then theres the fact that we only use about 12% of our brain
