I never bought one of those. I thought it was a stupid waste of money. I just throw diapers in my kitchen trash can that gets emptied every day anyway.

Sure!
Have you put the bag inside the genie?
Start there. The first time you use the insert bag it will be one piece. After you empty it (use the cut emblem) you'll need to tie the end in a knot. To put a dirty diaper in just put the diaper half way between the knotted bag and the clips to hold the diaper in place. Don't push down too much or it won't close right. Then, put down the lid and turn the knob a few times.
Open up the lid and make sure the bag is now diaper free. I've found that when you empty it those first few diaper sometimes collect by the knot. But, after your third or fourth your genie will be back to normal. It just depends on how far down the knot goes.
When it's correctly positioned for the next diaper it should have a gathered flat surface.
The smell will stay in the genie just like all other trash cans in your house. You can do two things to get rid of it. The first being getting some deco diaper disks or washing with soapy bleach water. Just depends on what you have time for...

Take it back they never work right, get your self a Diaper Champ and you will save at least $500+ a year on refills.
You can use regular trash bags (13 gallons). I prefer the regular bags that you get at the grocery store when you bring groceries home you can do 3 to 6 diapers at a time (that's enough) and by doing that you will save even more.

Sorry no. I stopped trying. I now use the little disposable bags and throw the diaper in the regular trash.

I gave up on the diaper genie, it sucks! I bought the Safetey first "neat" system and it works much better. It does not smell and is easy to operate.

My son is 6 months old and I am still trying to figure the thing completely out. It is suppose to cut the bag for me and I can't get it to so I just use scissors.
