As far as I can remember it is not necessarily old books that are valuable. For example incunabula (literally 'Cradle Books') are not necessarily valuable at all even tho hundreds of years old. I don't think the first edition with dust covers thing is a very interesting pursuit.
I was down on my luck in Ottawa many moons ago and combined with this chap to clear out some of the local history books in one of his relatives library and we managed to make quite a lot of money. So I would say comb out- of- the -way charity shops and the like for local stuff. Perhaps the dealers haven't Hoovered up the good stuff yet.

Thats about it. Other than that books are pretty worthless.

Well, if you could a copy of one of Shakespeare's plays in his own handwriting, that would be worth a couple of bucks. Or any first edition and/or autographed edition of a book by any famous writer who died more than 100 years ago.
