Considering the xbox 360 just recently within the last couple of months become capable of of 1080i And the ps3 came out in november with 1080p capabilities they are about the same and equal as far as current game titles able to go 1080p. Sony has a jump start because the game developers were already given the specs for developing the 1080p games a long time ago.
Ps3 has access to a larger game library because it is backward capable and can play games from ps1 and ps2. So think about what you have now because the 360 can also play xbox titles.
Playstation 3 does offer more out off the box than Xbox 360, and the PS3 network is free to owners of the PS3 and allows for video chat durng online gaming.

The battle of choosing is a lose lose. You will never be sure. Which ever one you buy, you will want the other for a certain game. That's how they make their money. Eventually people give in and buy the other as well. If I were you, I would buy, the 360 because right now it has a wider selection of games. When the PS3 comes out with a wider variety, then hit that up. Many games are available on both consoles. The 360 right now has Gears of War, and Lost Planet that have had great reviews. Halo 3 is also coming out soon. PS3 has Resistance: The Fall Of Man. I have personally played both, and the PS3 has the same graphics as the 360. The PS3 is definitely a beast, however very glitchy. The 360 has had time to get rid of their bugs. PS3 had been pushed out before they had the opportunity to make sure it was at 100%. Right now, I would go with whichever console suits your needs in the extras. The PS3 is a blu ray disk player. The 360 can interface with your computer. It can also play HD with an attachment. Its all you on that decision. Hope I laid out some things to look at before your purchase.

Well this is a hard question to answer because as of now the Xbox 360 has more games but in a year or two the PS3 will have a ton of games and gain popularity once the Blu-Ray generation finally gets everyone on board and Microsoft will need to completely go all out to beat it. Which is very hard since 1540p will be the next step and the amount of money people just invested in 1080p will not want to buy a new TV. So pretty Microsoft is screwed along with the future of consoles for the next 10-15 years. Yes 10-15 years!
If you thought it like this.
Hmm I bought a $600 ps3 and a $3000 1080p TV. Now Microsoft has come out with Xbox 540 and it supports 1540p and the system costs $750 and the TV costs $6000. I don't think that could work because only really dumb rich people would spend money for all that. Whereas you could buy the PS3 and be happy and carefree for the next 10 years.
Overall: PS3

Xbox 360 Full System
The regular Xbox 360 system includes the Xbox 360 console, a wireless controller, a headset, Ethernet cable, HD component and composite AV cables, and a 20GB hard disk drive all for $399. The hard disk will come preloaded with an Xbox Arcade game, and Microsoft will also throw in a media remote control through the end of 2005. This hardware package should have all the accessories you need to get started playing any of the system's games at launch, both online and offline, including that hard drive to store all your saved games, so you won't have to worry about a memory card. Although both packages include a "Silver" level subscription to Microsoft's Xbox Live online gaming service, the full package also includes a headset.
