If you haven't heard from them within a week, what are the odds of actually still being offered the position?

It probably means there was something in the interview that went wrong (ie. you didn't look as good or as young as you sounded on the phone or something you said in the interview didn't sit well with the interviewer or something in the background check went wrong or you have now or in the past a medical condition or are older and they are discriminating against those groups of people in order to keep their insurance premium costs low).

They don't want to say so at the time, so they lie to people to avoid arguments. Then you spend a week wasted thinking you have the job when they KNOW you won't get it.

At least some of them send out postcards saying you don't match their job qualifications but they will keep your application on file (but some don't).

Employers used to care about their employees who helped their companies succeed, now they don't and it is all about the all mighty dollar and how much the people at the top can sifon off the people at the bottom and look good on paper to stockholders. It is sad what the world is coming to.

If it's been a week and they haven't called you back, then call them and ask if the position is still open.
