I changed the batteries and was told it might need to be re-programmed. I took it to my local Ford dealer to be told it will cost me £75 ($140). Is there any way i can get it done cheaper or does it have to be done by a main dealer

It has to be done by the dealer. That's how they get you. If it isn't total keyless entry, forget the cost and just use the key.

Are you sure it is yours? A friend may have exchanged it to dupe you.
