Observation + logic = attainment of truth (maybe). If you don't use sound logical reasoning, then you reach invalid conclusions. For example, you see that a certain criminal is black (observation). So you conclude that all black people are criminals (poor logic). So you reach an invalid conclusion.

It separates the wheat from the chaff. The wheat being truth and the chaff the stuff which is not.
