None of the cats that we have in our local store are ever put down! That is cruel and unfair to the animal. If an animal is not bought after they are six months old, we try to find accomodating homes for them. I have taken in two, and there is only one other that I know of did not get sold. This is not the fault of the store, but kittens just don't "look cute" after 5 months old, and people don't want them. If at all possible, we try to find foster homes for them to go to for socialization, then to adoptable sites for Siamese. Over breeding of these animals is one of the major causes of too many pet store problems. We try to breed our cats only 6 times a year (two times for each queen) so this doesn't happen. Most of the time we have more people on our waiting list than there are kittens. Good quality breeders and not pet store puppy/kitty mills are the way to go. If thye do not offer you 6 & 8 weeks shots and wormings and a one year health guarantee with a contract-I wouldn't buy them. It is so sad the amount of money people pay for a sick animal tht doesn't always get what they need.
Part of this is experience, fact and the other is opinion. Take it as you will. Hope this answers your question, at least for our store. Thanks for asking.

I used to work in a pet store many years ago before I knew what Puppy mills even were. There are no more of these stores around where Iive anymore though. Anyway, the pet store owners usually start lowering the price once a puppy or kitten reaches 3 months old and if they stay longer, they practically give them away.

The puppies from stores that actually sell puppies come from puppy mills or rarely BYB. Responsible breeders do not sell puppies through a pet store. Stores like PetSmart and PetCo on the other hand don't sell dogs but house cats and dogs from local rescue organizations that are up for adoption from those organizations

depends on your pets stores. places like jack's lower the prices till their almost handing them to you because they'd rather see them with you then with at a shelter. we got a unwanted $10 bunny from jack's and she's the best thing that has happened to our family.
other places like those pet stores in mall order their animals off of order sheet. they check the box that says they need to 2 labs and 3 huskies then send the papers off the puppy/kitty-mills. the puppies and kitties arrive mass produced and scared. ready to be handled by people and they'll wait for months to find a good home, living in those little crates. those places put their unwanted animals down or give the to the shelters.
puppy mill and kitty mill animals have lots of medical issues like kennel cough and mouth problems. if you buy an puppy-kitty mill pet have some money in your pocket for the vet bills.

That is a very good question to ask the pet store owners and especially the people at all the pet store in malls. If they tell you I'd be shocked!
I've been told they are put down.
