They stand so close behind you even when there is lots of space, does no one respect personal space anymore, sometimes you can feel them breathing on you or bump into you, does anyone else feel the same! drives me mad! (end of rant)

What a great question. It annoys the hell outta me especially if its an old man whistling or someone with a cough or a cold!!

I know what you mean. Possibly they think they'll get to the counter/on the bus/bank machine quicker if they're closer, but there's nothing worse than standing in a queue and feeling someone breathing down ur neck or bumping into you.
Personal space should be respected.

You are obviously not in Scotland, people here have more respect for personal space. I agree it is cultural, and as brits we do stand back from people where as in Norway people do not have a problem with it. May be it is because they are practising their q'ing technique for the January sales or that they live in small houses where space is a premium.
Do not shower for a week keeping the same underwear on and see how many people are willing to breath down your neck..

do what i do and turn around ask if they want a piggy back ride, when they give you a funny look say well you're almost on me anyway.
they soon take a step back.
