When the roses are fresh, trim the ends at 45 degree angle with a sharp scissors or knife and remove leaves that will be below the waterline. Use cold water and ice as suggested. Add a teaspoon full of bleach and a teasponful of sugar. If no bleach available add a teaspoon of vinegar. Dont' change the water but top it up as needed. Keep them cool, out of direct sunlight and draughts. Also if you are cutting them rom your own garden, cut them when the weather is cool, i.e early morning or evening.

I used a neat little product called root tone or root grow.

I shaved the ends of the cut roses and then dipped them in this stuff. Stuck the cut ends down in a nice sandy soil mixture and snipped the buds off. I was able to grow one all the way into another bush that produced more of it's own roses!

Talk about life extension.... rose reincarnation! j/k

Last Valentines Day, I heard that if you trim the end (the part that goes in the water) at least once every 2-3 days that will help. Remember to cut at an angle. And keep them out of direct sunlight. And if at all possible, keep rose food in it.

A little sugar in the water .Keep the roses out of drafts and direct sunlight. at night put hem in a cool place (refrigerator if you can make a tall enough place) but temps close to 40 degrees are best and in the dark. think about how the florist keeps them.....(coool n dark.)As the outer petals begin to droop just pull them off . if you have lots of roses dry the petals on a paper and then store them in a pretty container that has a lid . Guests (and you)can enjoy a pleasant surprise for your nose when you lift the lid.

I've always heard that icewater helps, and keep the stems trimmed to be sure they don't heal over and block the water from entering. Don't change the water every day, just throw in a couple ice cubes. Roses don't do well if the water is changed every day.
