Contrary to the previous post, Java has very little if anything to do with the internet (although it can in the form of servlets and jsp). Java is a completely object oriented programming language developed by Sun Microsystems. One of the major benefits of the Java language is its platform independence. Java is run on a virtual machine which enables it to be run on multiple platforms without having to have platform specific code embeded in it. Another great benefit of the language is that you can download both the virtual machine and the software developement kit for the language for free from Sun's website. There are also many excellent development environments available for Java that are free. Eclipse and NetBeans are excellent examples of such development environments.

Java is a programming language that is purely object oriented. It has nothing to do with the internet. What the first poster was alluding to was Java applets and javascript.

Contrary to the previous posts, Java is architecture neutral, it is not specifically OO. But, the second post is correct other than that.

EDIT: I guess that depends on how technical you want to get.
