Hello there,

I ve got a Vauxhall Astra 1997 mk3 expression, and it has a little red LED on the panel, top rleft hand side of the heater temperture knob, and below the stereo.

sometimes it is on (but very dim) even i start my engine or turn the key to on, but more often it isnt.

any idea of what is it? (not the immobiliser i think)

cheers.

it doesnt have a air con. Also there are no symbols whatsoever next to it.

And it is not explained in the manufacturer manual as well.

by the very sound of it it is the remaining of the fitting of a alarm that was fitted from previous owner if it was the immobiliser it would go out when the car is started.

Perhaps it's something left over from when a previous owner fitted an alarm.
I once had a car where the previous bloke had been a physics teacher and added numerous odd little lights, including one that told him when the electric fan was running (as if he could do anything about it!), one which told him the boot lid was open and several others we never did fathom . . .

It may be the location for an aircon warning light or something else that you haven't got. Probably no bulb or circuit to it, but light from another source may be glowing through.

Is there any symbols beside the light, has your car got air-con it could possibly be the air-con temp light.
