the pedal goes half way down before i start to brake. the front chamber of my reservoir is empty, which i know means i have a leak and therefore i have no brakes working. but i still do brake which means that either front or back brakes is not working. i believe the back went out because the front chamber (also the smaller of the two chambers in the reservoir) is empty. can anyone tell me if im right or wrong on this?

I would say that you would have a rear cylinder leak a quick check is to have a look under the rear of the car at the backing plate of the brakes if there is a major leak there will be a stain around the slave cylinder area if there isnt you will have to remove the rear wheels and then the drums and then peel back the rubber boot on the cylinder if fluid runs out its definately leaking. Also look at the master cylinder around the back of it if there is a leak you will see a stain below the master cylinder. hope this helps you. If you have anymore questions pls let me know as i may be able to help more indepth

it's possible you have a leak... you will want to check the inside of your tires, all the way around, for evidence or fluid on them. Also check underneath your brake master cylinder, usually right underneith the resivoir that your brake fluid is in. The smaller tank is just a reserve tank more than likely, and the peddle going half way to the floor means that you have AIR in your brake lines and you have to create more pressure... cause the air is taking more pressure to compress and apply enough pressure to the pistons in your brake calipers. you're going to have to have you brake system bled out after you find the leak and get that fixed. The cylinder may just be really low due to rear brakes being very worn. the FILL mark on the resivoir is for brand new brakes on the front and rear. when you add more that ends up meaning that you have too much brake fluid in there and will just spill everywhere when you reset calipers for installing new breaks.

Fill the reservoir & pump the brakes a few times. Check for leaks. You should not drive the car. Until it is fixed. You can find the leak while parked in the yard.

Sounds like you have a fluid leak in the rear. Check the lines, hoses and wheel cylinders for signs of fluid leaks. I suggest that you do not drive it very far until its fixed, because if the front brakes were to blow a hose or something, you arent stopping at all anymore.

i'm not sure which ones aren't working, but you may have a wheel cylinder leaking or your master cylinder could be going out or a brake line is leaking. i would get it fixed.
