What are the best farm animals to get as PETS when starting a small farm? I am looking for animals that are friendly.
Thanks

Pygmy Goats! We have a farm and these little guys are the best! Make sure you get them very young-six weeks or so! They are extremely friendly and so comical to watch all the antics! You won't be dissapointed- for sure! Just make absolutely sure you feed the males a feed with an acidifier in it as they are prone to urinary problems if not. Nutrena has one and I believe there are several others available! I do not have mine fenced and they never leave the property! Most of the time they like to stay with the horses or cows! One of mine which weighs about 35 pounds challenges my Belgian draft horses (2500lbs each) in a head butt competition! He thinks he's just the package!

This depends on whether or not you want to keep the farm animal or eventually give it up to be food. If you like cows, you can get a mini cow for a pet. I think their life expectancy is probably as long as a regular cow which is; 9 to 12 years. If you want a farm animal that is not just a farm animal but a versatile animal, to play fetch with, house break, go places with you, etc. like a dog, I would suggest a minature horse. Their life expectancy is anywhere from 25 to 50 years.

If you are looking for farm specific, I would say pigs (they can be very affectionate) or a pygmy goat. Our goats come running when they see us, and will constantly try to jump in our arms (which can bowl you over if you aren't looking at them!). They are very affectionate and spend most of their time following us around, trying to get attention.
Another plus is that they will eat the weeds in your yard before they would eat grass.

I guess you want to start out small, so you will need a cat, several, really. There great pet's and they will control the rodents around the farm. and of course a dog, border collie, great pet and will heard and protect you animals. Now think Goat, chicken's,rouster, milk cow.You have the beginning's of a farm.

Chickens. Buy them as chicks and raise them. They can be taught to ride on bicycle handlebars, come when you call and are great at eating the weeds in your garden.

Get a couple geese as goslings and they will defend your property like trained dobermans.

Donkey. They are usually very calm around all types of people including children - but will keep wandering dogs away from your chickens.

I like having chickens, they are nice and they don't need alot of care. ours live out doors (i mean not in a chicken coop) so they dont need to get fed because they ea bugs and grain droped by horses. You can feed them corn or scratch but if you have a lot of rom for them to roam they do well on their own. All you have to do is keep a waterer out for them. Also the best part is that since they eat bugs it's good pest controll because you cant spray around horses.

Pigs, goats, and donkeys are all very sweet and friendly. Sheep are, too, but they require alot of care. I would suggest introducing yourself to farmers in the area and asking them for recommendations in starting a farm. It's best to ask someone who's already succeeded. Good luck!

goats or sheep are really good starting animals because they live largely on grass and are very easily kept.
