I think the media have misrepresented this topic. It is not possible for there to be a "hole" in the crust that passes into the mantle. Because if there was a hole, hot magma, from shallow depth, would rise up and come into contact with sea water. This would then solidify and seal any hole. I think what scientists mean is that there is a large area beneath the sea where the oceanic crust is unusually thin.

Its a window into the interior of the earth, just like Bramley Murton said. Or possibly a door.
Lets see if they come back from there expedition. Or if so, with stories of an underground city full of caged humans, reptiles that stand 7ft tall, small grey alians and other evil.

My theory is that this is just a piece of the mysterious Atlantis (the lost continent). Atlantis may no longer be a mystery but a fact that it is fallen. If this is located west of africa in the atlantic ocean, then history may be altered due to this discovery if geologists confirmed that this is really the lost continent of Atlantis.
